The Tutorial Teaches 20% of the Game

This is normal for roguelikes. The surface mechanics — shooting, dodging, Bullet Time — are obvious. The systems underneath, the ones that determine whether a run is easy or impossible, are things you figure out through dying. A lot.

Here's what I've pieced together after 30 hours. Some of this is confirmed by developer comments on the Steam forums. Some is my own testing. All of it is stuff I wish I'd known from the start.

The Stealth Detection System

Killer Bean has a full stealth system that the game barely explains. Every enemy has a detection meter (invisible to the player) that fills based on three factors: line of sight, sound, and alert state.

Line of sight is the big one. If an enemy is looking at you, the meter fills. The rate depends on distance and whether you're crouching. At close range, you'll be spotted in under a second even while crouched. At long range, crouching in shadow can prevent detection indefinitely.

Sound is the factor most players ignore. Sprinting makes noise. Firing unsuppressed weapons makes noise. Explosions make noise that propagates across multiple rooms. Enemies within hearing range will investigate. They might not find you, but they'll go alert, which means their detection meter fills faster if you enter their sight line.

What the Stealth skill tree actually does: reduces the rate at which the detection meter fills, increases the damage bonus on undetected shots, and — at higher levels — makes enemies lose track of you faster when you break line of sight. The capstone ability gives you a brief window of invisibility after a silent kill.

The practical takeaway: Stealth in Killer Bean is about managing detection states, not about being perfectly invisible. You can shoot an enemy, break line of sight, reposition, and re-engage. The AI won't know exactly where you are after a few seconds of visual contact loss. This is the Stealth build's real power — not avoiding fights, but controlling the terms of every engagement.

Weapon Skill Interactions

The random weapon skills (elemental effects, ricochet, penetration, etc.) interact with each other in ways the tooltips don't explain. Shock rounds conduct through water and wet surfaces, creating chain-stun zones. Fire rounds ignite gas leaks. Ice rounds slow enemies and make them take extra damage from the next melee hit.

Ricochet rounds bounce off metal surfaces. On maps with metal walls or shipping containers, a ricochet SMG can clear a room by shooting at a wall. On open outdoor maps, ricochet does almost nothing.

Armor penetration rounds are essential against Mercenaries but wasted on Bad Beans. The game doesn't tell you which enemies are armored until you're shooting them and seeing reduced damage numbers. After a few runs, you learn to identify armored enemies by their silhouette before engaging.

Faction Behavior Patterns

Each faction fights differently, and the differences go deeper than "this one uses explosives."

Bad Beans are straightforward but numerous. They rely on volume — lots of enemies with basic weapons. Their weakness is crowd control. A single explosive or a weapon with AoE mods clears them efficiently.

Mercenaries use tactics. They flank, they use cover, they coordinate attacks. If you see one Mercenary, assume there are two more moving toward your sides. Their weakness is that coordinated behavior becomes predictable — they always flank in the same pattern.

Shadow Beans hunt you. They use stealth themselves, appearing from unexpected angles. Audio cues are critical — you'll hear their footsteps or a suppressed weapon firing before you see them. Their weakness is that they're fragile. Once you spot them, they go down fast.

Pirate Commandos control space. They use explosives and area denial to force you into specific positions, then hit you from those positions. Their weakness is that they telegraph their attacks — you always have a second or two to reposition before the explosion lands.

Procedural Generation Logic

The game doesn't generate truly random islands. It generates from templates. Each template has defined parameters: island shape, biome type, building density, faction distribution, mission pool. The templates get shuffled at the start of each run.

Why this matters: recognizing templates lets you predict what kind of run you're in. Urban islands (dense buildings, tight corridors) favor shotgun and SMG builds. Open islands (sparse cover, long sight lines) favor rifles and snipers. Industrial islands (explosive barrels everywhere, environmental hazards) favor builds that can use the environment.

You can't choose your island template, but you can adapt your playstyle. If you load into an open island with a shotgun build, consider respeccing. Or accept the challenge — some of the most memorable runs come from making the wrong build work on the wrong map.

The Coffee System's Hidden Depth

Coffee items have explicit effects (speed boost, damage buff, healing) and implicit synergies. Drinking coffee while Bullet Time is active extends the slow-mo duration slightly. Drinking two different coffees in quick succession combines their effects for a short window — at the cost of reducing the individual durations.

The game tracks what coffee types you've used in a run. Repeated use of the same type reduces its effectiveness (diminishing returns). Rotating between different coffee types avoids this. This mechanic encourages experimenting with the full range of coffee items instead of spamming one favorite.

Also: the coffee system is getting modded already. Someone on the workshop released a mod that adds like 20 new coffee variants with absurd effects. The community is having fun with it.

Ammo Types and Enemy Armor

One mechanic the game absolutely does not explain: enemy armor isn't binary. Different enemies have different armor ratings, and different ammo types penetrate different amounts. Standard rounds do full damage to Bad Beans, reduced damage to Mercenaries, and almost nothing to armored boss phases. Armor-piercing rounds reverse this — they over-penetrate unarmored enemies (reducing damage slightly) but deal full damage through armor.

This matters because you can't always tell who's armored until the damage numbers pop up. A good rule of thumb: any enemy wearing visible chest plates or helmets has at least medium armor. Enemies in fabric or light clothing are unarmored. Bosses are always armored, and their armor rating increases with each phase.

Swapping ammo types mid-fight isn't practical. Pick one ammo type per mission based on the dominant faction. If the mission is mostly Mercenaries, go armor-piercing. If it's Bad Beans, standard rounds give better overall DPS. If it's mixed, bring a primary with one type and a secondary with the other.

Hidden Difficulty Modifiers

Beyond the explicit difficulty setting, the game has hidden modifiers that scale based on your performance. Die less, and enemy counts gradually increase. Clear missions faster, and enemy accuracy improves. It's a subtle rubberband system that keeps the challenge consistent regardless of skill level. The developers haven't confirmed this, but the data miners on the Steam forums have found references to it in the game files.
